Final step away from (mt)

Today I migrated my blog to a new server - it has been the plan for quite a while, since I bought a new VPS from a european hosting center.

Until now, my sites have run on a Media Temple (dv) server, but one of my most visited sites is danish, wiinyt.dk, and the ping times to servers located in USA just isn't optimal. Instead I found a hosting center in Germany, yourshelter.net, and ping times are now 20-30ms instead of Media Temples 190-200ms.

So if the site loads faster for people in EU than others, this is why.

I too have migrated from (mt) to YourShelter on the exact same reason.

Everything went well with setting up at ys? Are you running Apache? The reason I'm asking is that i found Apache killed my server by being too heavy, so now I'm using Lighttpd instead, which is nice. But I miss apache's mod_rewrite and .htacess support just a bit. And mod_rails seems nice too...

I chose the VDS D1 package, where I think I have plenty of resources to run Apache - haven't been a problem yet at least.

I have chosen to lease a Plesk license though, makes my life much easier :) Yourshelter provided me a 100-domain license for €8/month, which is way cheaper than Parallels themselves lease it for.

I'm more than happy with the solution :)

Alright. Not bad. I'm only doing the VPS-thing. With one third of your ram. Maybe I was just not very good at setting up apache and ought to just try it again.

I can recommend using gratisdns.dk for the dns-records. They make moving around just a bit easier. I'm also using their email service, mxhotel.dk.

Domains are hosted at gratisdns.dk :) E-mails are hosted on yourshelter though.

If you go read the articles at http://articles.slicehost.com/ Mikkel, you'll find a lot of useful information on setting up VPS's. (I know its written for slicehost customers, but it applies to any server running a flavour of linux they deal with really.)

Out of curiosity: Besides ping times, did you experience any other quirks with your (mt) setup?

Robert> I ran out of memory on the server, so I had to buy "extra RAM" - a quite expensive affair. But I haven't had any other issues/quirks :)

I've had an account with FutureHosting for quite a while now. Good service and more cost effective than other places. Works well for me.
Have around 30GB space + Backup on an external server as well as 512MB RAM.

I prefer cPanel over Plesk. 1. it is an unlimited accounts license, and I've found it easier to use among all the control panels that I have used.

768 is a lot of ram, why did you need to upgrade?

I forgot to add, I use Google Hosted Apps for my email. Gives me a great deal of space, handles my spam and takes the load of the VPS.

Ajay> I run quite many web sites on the server, a lot of mails, and some quite heavy cron jobs. I could perhaps settle with 512MB :)

I have considered moving mails to Google, I just honestly dislike how the IMAP works with gmail labels as folders etc.
